ITCILO Training Centre Expansion
Developed in collaboration with IPE Progetti for the International Training Centre of the ILO (ITCILO), this project reinterprets the architectural identity of the United Nations training campus in Turin through a contemporary and light-driven facade strategy. The ITCILO functions as the training and capacity-building branch of the International Labour Organization, welcoming participants from around the world for programs focused on social justice, sustainable development, labor policy, and the future of work.
The architectural concept was developed around the manipulation of translucency, atmosphere, and visual softness. The building envelope combines translucent polycarbonate panels with opaque white cladding systems, carefully calibrated to control natural light penetration according to the needs of different interior functions. Vertical panel modulation creates a rhythmic facade composition that changes throughout the day depending on weather and light conditions, giving the volume a constantly shifting presence within the landscape. Integrated lighting systems embedded behind the translucent surfaces transform the building at night into a softly glowing lantern-like object, reinforcing the campus identity while creating a calm and welcoming atmosphere for an international educational environment.
The project’s elongated and slightly curved geometry allows the facade to interact delicately with the surrounding greenery, while elevated ground-floor transparency visually lightens the mass of the building and strengthens the relationship between indoor communal spaces and the exterior landscape. The overall design balances institutional clarity with a more contemporary and human-centered architectural language, aiming to create a learning environment that feels open, inclusive, and forward-looking.
